David Bolhuis has announced his candidacy for Mayor of Roseburg.

A campaign release said Bolhuis said he was inspired to run for the position through his varied experiences working with a broad range of residents throughout the city. He said with new and focused leadership, Roseburg has the opportunity to, “build on its strong foundations and blossom into a wonderful and prosperous city for its residents”.

Bolhuis said he was born and raised in Beaverton, Oregon and graduated from Beaverton High School in 2011. He graduated with a degree in history and archaeology from Grand Valley State in Michigan and worked in an auto parts manufacturing plant until he was offered the opportunity to train as an appraiser under his father. Once the apprenticeship requirements were completed, Bolhuis and his wife decided they needed to find a permanent home to settle down and grow their roots. After visiting Roseburg a couple of times. Bolhuis said, “we fell in love with the city and knew this is where we wanted to raise a family”.

Bolhuis said his business has grown and evolved over the years, and he is now a licensed broker. He said he has also had the chance to work on restoring old homes throughout the county.

Bolhuis said he believes in service, duty and being proactive and feels the mayor’s office provides an excellent opportunity to serve the people of Roseburg and to work to resolve many of the issues that have been plaguing the city.

Bolhuis listed five primary items he would work toward accomplishing as mayor:

*Addressing the homeless situation downtown and working towards a solution

*Investing more resources into downtown which includes resolving the problems with parking and enforcement

*Working to attract new employers across a broad spectrum of industries to provide new and varied employment opportunities for residents

*Investing more time and resources into maintaining and opening new parks, pathways and other public spaces

*Investing in the future of the city so that Roseburg can maintain its young families and a high quality of life for all residents.
