The Castle Fire burning in the Umpqua National Forest is listed at 2,995 acres, and 48 percent contained, as of midday Thursday.

The fire is burning 23 miles northeast of Tiller and has 727 personnel working on the incident.

An update from the F.D.N.Y. Incident Management Team said firefighters continue to patrol and mop up during the day and prepare for firing operations overnight. Increased fire behavior is being observed within the fire perimeter due to hot and dry weather conditions but well within containment lines. All lines were held during the day with no spots detected. The Castle Fire is being managed for full suppression.

The thermal trough is now moving east followed by a strong upper ridge, creating possible unstable conditions. Above average dry and high temperatures with critically low humidity in the afternoons continue, resulting in a heightened risk of fire activity. Fire danger remains Very High in the forest.

The expanded closure area continues in the Umpqua National Forest in order to protect the public and provide a safe environment for firefighters. All National Forest System lands, roads and trails remain closed to the public. That includes around a dozen recreation areas.
