Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association responded to a fire in south Douglas County on Friday afternoon.
DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said at approximately 3:30 p.m. firefighters from DFPA and from the Glendale Fire Department were dispatched to a report of a smoke column located approximately two miles northwest of Glendale near McCullough Creek Road. Pope said upon arrival, crews found an estimated 7-acre quick-moving, wind-driven, slash fire advancing into the timberline, along with an estimated three quarter of an acre spot fire.
Pope said an aggressive initial attack was launched, involving 5 engines, 2 dozers, 1 water tender, overhead command staff, and additional personnel and equipment from Glendale Fire. Additional district and contracted resources were ordered and arrived throughout the night and into Saturday morning.
Heavy mop-up operations continued throughout the weekend, including the use of infrared technology each night to identify and extinguish residual heat sources.
Pope said mop-up operations on the confirmed 1.9- acre spot fire are now 100 percent complete. The main fire, named the Lunsbury Fire, totaling 11.9 acres, was at 85 percent mop-up status, as of Monday afternoon. DFPA resources will remain actively engaged on the fire for several more days as limited smoke may continue to be visible in the area.
Pope said even though fire season has not yet been declared, warming temperatures and dry fuels resulting from ongoing drought conditions have increased fire danger across southwestern Oregon. DFPA reminds the public to exercise extreme caution when recreating or working in forest lands.
Pope said the cause of the Lunsbury Fire remains under active investigation. No homes or structures were threatened during the incident. More information on fire danger from the Douglas Forest Protective Association is available at www.dfpa.net
