CREWS BATTLE ACTIVE HOME FIRE NORTH OF COSTCO

Thursday morning crews with Central Douglas Fire & Rescue battled an active home fire just north of Roseburg.

CDF&R Fire Marshal Josh Waechter said the structure fire was on Mobridge Avenue near Costco and was called in just after 5:20 a.m. Waechter said the initial report was that the bathroom was on fire.

The first arriving unit found active fire on the back side of the structure. Property owners stated that everyone was out of the home. Due to access issues caused by extreme hoarding, extinguishing the fire took 40 minutes. Waechter said due to the hoarding conditions, crews had to gain access to the structure by cutting openings in the home’s exterior walls.

CDF&R responded with three fire engines, two command units and the department’s air vehicle used to fill breathing bottles, totaling eleven paid and volunteer personnel. CDF&R was assisted by Umpqua Valley Ambulance, Winston Police Department, Pacific Power and Avista Gas. Waechter said the owners stated that a loud pop was heard in the bathroom. Crews found evidence of unpermitted electrical work in and around the structure, which is the leading theory on the cause of the fire.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the displaced residents.
