Roseburg Schools has responded to the Thursday arrest of two staff members of Fremont Middle School.
A message to district families issued Friday morning said the arrests were related to an ongoing investigation involving physical injuries to students in the Developmental Learning Center at Fremont.
Superintendent Jared Cordon said, “I am shocked and deeply disturbed by the allegations that led to these charges. If the conduct described is proven true, it represents a serious breach of trust and a failure to uphold the fundamental responsibility adults have to protect children. Our students must be safe at school, physically, emotionally, and psychologically. There is no circumstance under which harm to a child is acceptable”.
Cordon said upon learning of the allegations, the employees involved were placed on administrative leave, and the district initiated an investigation while notifying and coordinating fully with law enforcement. Cordon said district staff will continue to cooperate completely as the investigation process moves forward. He said he is grateful for the support of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and its School Resource Officers.
Cordon said Roseburg Schools will take every action within its legal authority to ensure accountability and to protect students. Cordon said, “Every adult who serves in our schools must uphold the safety, dignity and well-being of students. We are also reviewing our procedures and oversight practices to determine whether additional safeguards are necessary.”
Cordon’s message concluded, “I recognize the anger, concern and heartbreak this news may cause. I share those feelings and I grieve with the affected students and their families. Our focus remains on supporting students, communicating responsibility and maintaining safe learning environments across the district”.
