The Yoncalla City Council has decided to end its contract for law enforcement services with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
The decision was in a unanimous vote during a council meeting on Monday night. A resolution said the city no longer has sufficient unrestricted revenue to fund the current intergovernmental agreement. The resolution thanked DCSO for the decades of service that has been provided. The contract will end December 31st.
Interim City Administrator Dan Chandler said the cost for the contract this year was $140,000, with the fee next year rising to close to $190,000. Chandler said the five-year projection was right at a million dollars. The city is still working out what to do about enforcement of local violations, like nuisances. Chandler said there are a variety of options, including contracting with another city or doing code-enforcement in-house.
Yoncalla has a population of just over 1,000. It was incorporated as a city in 1901.
