The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has suspended the monthly employment and unemployment reports for the nation, states and metropolitan areas as of October 1st, due to the federal government shutdown.
A State of Oregon Employment Department release said in the meantime, OED has released the latest Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. State Employment Economist Gail Krumenauer said the most current QCEW data provides employment trends and wages by industry through June 2025. Krumenauer said the monthly employment numbers originally scheduled for release on Wednesday would have included information for September 2025.
OED said the newest QCEW data shows that covered employment totaled 2,004,700 in the second quarter of 2025. That was a decline of 3,800 jobs or 0.2 percent from the second quarter of 2024. The private sector lost 11,100 jobs over the year, a decline of 0.6 percent. The manufacturing sector lost nearly 7,400 jobs between the second quarters of 2024 and 2025. That is a drop of 3.9 percent. Meanwhile private health care and social assistance grew by 14,100 jobs or 4.7 percent over the year.
Krumenauer said government gained 7,300 jobs, or 2.4 percent over the year. Three out of four government jobs added were in local government. The latest QCEW figures show the federal government dropped 400 jobs compared with the second quarter of 2024.
OED plans to highlight the latest available local jobs news on October 21st. A schedule of future releases will be updated when federal services return.
