On Monday, the Oregon House passed Senate Bill 1098.
State Representative Boomer Wright of Reedsport said the legislation limits a school district’s ability to choose age-appropriate books and learning materials for school libraries, when materials contain perspectives or stories or are created by individuals from protected classes.
Wright, a member of the House Education Committee, said, “I voted against SB 1098 because there were no sideboards on age appropriateness”. Wright said, “I do not support banning books. I support age appropriateness when choosing instructional materials”.
Wright said the amendment supporting age appropriateness was not adopted. Wright said, “If it had, I could have voted in support of SB 1098”.
SB 1098 now heads to Governor Kotek’s desk for her signature.
