Wildlife Safari has introduced its newest resident Mggu, a female southern white rhino.

World Rhino Day was Sunday.

Mguu, whose name means “legs” in Swahili, comes to Winston from the North Carolina Zoo and has joined current rhinos, Taryn and Kayode, in the South Africa section of the drive through.

A release said Wildlife Safari is proud to be part of the global efforts to protect rhinos from extinction and celebrate the amazing species. Taylor McInroy, one of Mguu’s keepers, is already bonding with the new rhino. McInroy said, “I’ve started training with her already and she is so smart! She is super sweet and loves attention from her keepers”.

Guests can see the rhinos in their naturalistic habitat, learning about the critical need to protect the animals from the severe threat of poaching and habitat loss. Wildlife Safari donates a portion of all animal encounter tickets to conservation groups. One of them being supported this year is the International Rhino Foundation. The release said the organization’s mission is to ensure the survival of rhinos through strategic partnerships, targeted protection, and scientifically sound interventions.
