A DCSO report said at 9:50 p.m. units responded to a residence in the 4100 block of Carnes Road in Green, to do a welfare check on a female. Deputies thought the woman might be with 32-year-old William Hawelu, who is restrained from contacting her.

While at the residence, an SUV drove into the driveway. The driver saw the deputies, and hit reverse, going back into the street. He was recognized as Hawelu, who had the woman in question with him. A short pursuit began until the vehicle crashed into a tree in the 2000 block of La Canada Drive.

Hawelu was allegedly not cooperative during the investigation and was taken to CHI Mercy Medical Center to be evaluated for possible injuries. During their contact, deputies developed probable cause for DUII. The woman was also taken to Mercy. She hit her head on the windshield when the crash occurred and had a large laceration on her head. A search warrant was applied for and granted for the driver’s blood. After the execution of the warrant, Hawelu was taken to jail.

He was charged with violation of a restraining order, reckless driving, reckless endangering, attempting to elude police in a vehicle, violation of a restraining order and for driving under the influence of intoxicants. Hawelu was detained without bail.
