Crews continue to secure fire perimeter and mop up on the Tyee Ridge Complex, 20 miles northwest of Roseburg.
The complex is now listed at 7,366 acres and is 35 percent contained. 1,654 people are assigned to the fire.
An update from Northwest Incident Management Team 1 said across the two main fires in the complex, the Cougar and Lighthouse fires – crews concentrated on mopping up deeper into the fire’s interior and further securing control lines. Tuesday’s warmer and drier weather allowed firefighters to begin tactical firing operations on the northeast corner of the Cougar Creek and the west corner of the Lighthouse fires in the late afternoon. Firing slowed the fire’s spread by removing fuels in a safe and controlled manner. These targeted operations will resume Wednesday, weather permitting.
Crews along Hubbard Creek Road focused on mopping up around homes and strengthening control lines to keep the fire away from structures. On many areas of the complex, crews are pushing more towards the fire’s interior each day with mop up operations. Mop up exposes firefighters to additional hazards such as snags and fire-weakened trees that pose risks to firefighter safety. Tree falling modules are working in many locations to remove hazard trees so firefighters can safety engage in mop up.
The update said as the operational priority is shifting away from the firefight to mopping up, more crews will be transferred from night shift to day shift. Day shift crews will be tasked with mopping up and securing the fire line in various locations.
