A Portland man died following an ATV crash on Sunday afternoon.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said just after 4:30 p.m. dispatchers received a call about an injury ATV wreck on the Umpqua Dunes National Recreation Area in a location known as Third Finger.

Undersheriff Brad O’Dell said upon arrival, deputies located the operator, identified as 31-year-old Austin Anthony Durret. The man was found unresponsive and not breathing. EMS personnel responded to the scene and subsequently pronounced him deceased.

O’Dell said the preliminary investigation indicates Durrett had been riding with a group near Fourth Finger. He reportedly left the area known as Lake Shot to locate another member of the group who had run out of fuel. When Durrett failed to return, members of the group began searching for him and located him approximately 45 minutes later.

O’Dell said based on the initial investigation, Durrett appears to have traveled off an approximately 40-foot razorback dune at a high rate of speed. The ATV became airborne before crashing.

The Douglas County Medical Examiners Office was notified and is investigating the death. Durrett’s family was also notified.

The crash remains under investigation.
