FATAL LOG TRUCK CRASH CLAIMS LIFE OF SUTHERLIN MAN

October 16, 2026 9:30 a.m.

A Sutherlin man died on Tuesday morning following a collision involving two commercial logs on Fort McKay Road near Oakland.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report released Friday morning said at approximately 3:15 a.m. deputies responded to the 1600 block of Fort McKay Road following a report of a serious motor vehicle crash.

Undersheriff Brad O’Dell said the preliminary investigation indicates that 37-year-old Tyler Hunt was operating a 2025 Peterbilt truck westbound on Fort McKay Road when he encountered an eastbound 2025 Peterbilt log truck operated by 60-year-old Roy Way of Summerville, Oregon.

O’Dell said investigators determined that the trailer of Way’s loaded log truck was traveling partially within the opposing lane of travel. As the trucks approached one another, Hunt was unable to avoid a collision, and his vehicle struck the loaded log trailer.

Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures on Hunt; however, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Way was not injured in the crash and is cooperating with the investigation.

O’Dell said the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team responded to document and investigate the collision. Investigators have obtained evidence as part of the ongoing investigation. The Oregon State Police is also assisting with the investigation.

The circumstances that caused the log trailer to enter the opposing lane of travel remain under investigation. Both commercial vehicles were removed from the scene by a towing company.

O’Dell said assisting agencies included the Sutherlin Police Department, Oregon State Police, Sutherlin Fire Department, Umpqua Valley Ambulance and Douglas County Public Works.
