The Roseburg Public Library welcomes the public to a Zoom presentation on invasive species at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, September 24th.

Amy Crawford, author of “Undesirable: Invasive Species, Humans, and Where We All Belong,” will share details of her book during a free, recorded presentation available only at the library. The program is made possible by the Smithsonian Associates Rural Library Program.

A city release said Crawford is a freelance journalist based in Michigan who writes about the environment, cities, history, and art. A regular contributor to Smithsonian, she also has written for the Boston Globe, The Guardian, Nature Conservancy magazine and Slate.

“Undesirable” explores the early 20th century, when U.S. government scientists and their European colleagues went to great lengths to seek out and bring home from abroad new seeds and cultivars for farms, gardens and orchards. But in many cases, these “plant explorers,” though much vaunted in their day, wound up triggering what are now considered ecological disasters: Some of their discoveries are among the 21st century’s most detested invasive species, joining others that arrived via the pet trade or through the simple carelessness of an earlier era.
