The Castle Fire burning on the Umpqua National Forest remains at 2,995 acres with 48 percent containment. It is burning 23 miles northeast of Tiller with 696 personnel working on the incident.

An update from the F.D.N.Y. Incident Management Team said firefighters continue to mop up during the day, with unstable weather conditions causing firing to only occur if aiding suppression strategies. With the increase in heat and drying of fuels causing more extreme fire behavior, resources are being relocated to areas of the fire with more potential for spotting. A number of small fires have broken containment lines and are being actively suppressed. The Castle Fire is being managed for full suppression.

Above average high temperatures and dry conditions with critically low humidity in the afternoons and poor recovery overnight continue. This is causing a heightened risk of fire activity. The forest remains at a Very High danger level.

The Umpqua National Forest continues with an expanded closure area to protect the public and provide a safe environment for firefighters. All National Forest System lands, roads and trails are closed to the public within the closure area. The closure will remain in effect until conditions allow for reopening. Around a dozen recreation areas remain closed.
