With rising temperatures and decreasing humidity, Umpqua National Forest officials have raised fire danger from ‘high’ to ‘very high’, effective Wednesday.

A UNF release said Public Use Restrictions Stage Two and Industrial Fire Precaution Level 2 remain in place across the Forest.

An exemption from the restrictions includes campfires within Forest Service-constructed concrete or metal fire rings within designated developed recreation sites. Additionally, cook stoves, lanterns or campfires fueled solely by gas, with an on/off switch in an area where flammable vegetation is cleared a minimum of 3-feet away from open flame on all sides are also exempt.

Restrictions include all campfires, charcoal or briquette fires, pellet fires, and smoking except within an enclosed vehicle, building or area cleared of flammable material at least three feet in diameter. Machinery with internal combustion engines such as chainsaws are also prohibited. Motorized vehicles may operate only on designated trails and roads. Welding and explosives are also included in the restriction.

The release said prevention is the strongest defense against human-caused wildfires. Visitors and local communities are urged to take extra precautions. Remember that even fires in Forest-constructed fire rings within designated recreation sites need to be dead out before leaving the campsite. Drown, stir, and feel the campfire with the back of the hand. The fire should feel cold to the touch before leaving the campsite.
