The Castle Fire burning on the Umpqua National Forest is now 35 percent contained with minimum fire growth as of midday Wednesday.

An update from Northwest Incident Management Team 13 said the fire, which is burning 23 miles northeast of Tiller, is now at 2,796 acres. 696 personnel are working on the fire.

Firefighters will continue to bolster containment lines with firing operations on the north and southeast sides of the fire, following very successful firing operations over the last few days. Mop up and patrol continue on the northwest and southwest sections of the fire perimeter. Backing, flanking and vigorous tree torching is still being observed within the fire perimeter due to the hot and dry weather conditions. The Castle Fire is being managed for full suppression.

The Umpqua National Forest continues with the expanded closure order to protect the public and provide a safe environment for fire fighters. All National Forest System lands, roads and trails are closed to the public within the closure area. Over a dozen recreation areas are closed due to the fire. The closure will remain in effect until conditions allow for reopening.
