The Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby has announced the recipients of its 2026 grant program, awarding a total of $30,020 to support fisheries enhancement, habitat restoration, research, and educational opportunities throughout the Umpqua River Basin.
A release said this year the Derby received several outstanding grant applications. Thanks to the continued support of Derby partners, sponsors, supporters, and participants, the Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby committee is proud to support projects that align with its mission of enhancing fisheries and improving opportunities for future generations to enjoy the Umpqua Basin’s natural resources. The 2026 projects include:
*Gardner-Reedsport-Winchester Bay Hatchery: Funding will support the purchase of a Redd Zone Egg Eyeing Station.
*From Our Lakes and Rivers to the Sea Program- Fly Fishing Veterans: Funding will provide fishing licenses and tags for participants in ocean fisheries opportunities in the Winchester Bay/Reedsport area.
*Rock Creek Streamside Restoration Project – Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife: Funding will support restoration efforts along more than nine miles of Rock Creek impacted by the 2020 Archie Creek Fire.
*Rock Creek Hatchery – Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife: Funding will support the purchase of Zephyr euthanasia devices to provide a more humane, efficient and consistent method of handling fish during spawning broodstock collection and fish donation operations.
*Diamond Lake Isotope Study – Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife: Funding will support completion of this important research project, providing valuable information to help guide future fisheries management decisions.
*Upper Honey Creek Restoration Project – Partnershiip for Umpqua Rivers: Funding will support stream restoration through the construction of log and boulder structures within a rerouted section of the creek.
The release said the Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby remains committed to supporting projects that improve fish habitat, enhance fisheries, promote education, and provide meaningful opportunities for people to connect with the region’s natural resources.
