Roseburg Police charged a man with fourth-degree assault on Thursday afternoon.

An RPD report said at 3:40 p.m. officers responded to the 1600 block of Northeast Fremont Avenue regarding an assault that had allegedly occurred on Wednesday in the parking lot of a business in the 2400 block of Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard. The victim claimed that an unknown male confronted him about stealing a backpack and then punched him in the face, causing injury. The suspect, a 56-year-old, was identified and contacted. He admitted to the confrontation but denied hitting the victim.

He was also charged with first-degree criminal trespass. Bail was set at $12,500.
