Douglas Education Service District’s Peer2Peer Program has been recognized with the 2026 Exceptional Program Award at the Oregon Statewide Transition Conference.

An ESD release said the award honors programs demonstrate excellence in supporting students as they transition from school to competitive, integrated employment. Douglas ESD’s Peer2Peer program was selected for its strong impact on vocational development and its commitment to helping students build the skills needed for life after high school.

The program was launched in 2022 through a partnership between Douglas ESD and South Umpqua School District, with support from the Oregon Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. Since then, it has expanded to include the Sutherlin School District with plans to expand to additional districts.

The release said Peer2Peer brings together students from the general education population and students receiving special education services in a shared, paid summer work setting. Student mentors receive training to support their peers, creating natural supports in the workplace while also developing leadership skills. Prior to and during their placements, each student also receives instruction in interview skills and job preparedness. Through this mentorship model, all students gain hands-on job skills while learning alongside peers in real workplace environments.

Participants work with local businesses and organizations, where they are expected to meet employer standards, while building confidence, and strengthening communication and problem-solving skills. The program also encourages students to identify their interests, choose work placements and advocate for the supports they need to succeed.

The Exceptional Program Award recognizes Peer2Peer as a model for effective transition opportunities. The program’s success is made possible thanks to the dedication of Douglas ESD’s Youth Development team, school district employees and community partners.
