MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HOLIDAY MEANS CLOSURES

January 19l 2026 3:40 a.m.

Monday is the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and that means there are a number of closures.

Federal, state, county and city offices are not open. Regular mail will not be delivered.  School is not in session. Banks and credit unions are closed. Many professional offices will be shuttered. Most retail outlets will be open for their normal hours.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day became a federal holiday when President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law in 1983. It was first observed three years later in 1986. It took until 2000 for all 50 states to officially recognize it. The holiday honors the late civil rights leader, Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated on April 4th, 1968.
