Monday is Memorial Day and there are a number of closures.

Federal, state, county and city offices and buildings will not be open. Regular mail is not being delivered. Schools are not in session. Banks and credit unions remain closed. Some retail stores will be closed or are operating on reduced hours.

Memorial Day honors those who have died while serving in the county’s armed forces. The holiday, initially known as Decoration Day, was officially established as a national holiday in 1868. After World War 1, the name was changed to Memorial Day. It became a federal holiday in 1971.
