GARAGE FIRE IN GARDEN VALLEY AREA WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

March 28, 2024 4:00 a.m.

Crews with Douglas County Fire District No. 2 responded to a garage fire on Osage Drive in the Garden Valley area, northwest of Roseburg on Wednesday afternoon.

Battalion Chief Josh Waechter said crews were dispatched just after 2:00 p.m. Waechter said the first arriving fire crew reported a working shop fire with nearby exposures threatened. Firefighters were able to knock down most of the fire with an initial attack using three hose lines. However, due to a trapped fire between a motorhome and an exterior wall, fire crews spent extensive time overhauling the structure, which was unoccupied at the time of the incident.

DCFD2 responded to the incident with three fire engines, two tenders, one air support unit and one command unit, totaling 20 personnel. Waechter said crews were unable to determine the cause of the fire. Sutherlin Fire Department, Lookingglass Rural Fire District, Avista Gas and Pacific Power assisted at the fire scene.

Another commercial structure fire was reported at nearby Melrose Elementary School during this time. Two crews were released from the Osage incident to respond, along with automatic aid provided by Roseburg Fire Department and the Winston-Dillard Fire District. Waechter said ultimately, that reported fire was a false alarm.
