The Chilcoot Fire is listed at 1,656 acres while the Ridge Fire is at 236 acres, as both continue burning in the Umpqua National Forest.
A UNF update said light rain was widespread over both fires Thursday, aiding firefighting efforts. The current low-pressure system is expected to remain in place through the weekend, bringing anywhere from half to one inch of rain. Due to the rugged, steep terrain; firefighters will be using extra caution as the hillsides become slick. Several felling modules are working to help mitigate the risk of hazard trees coming down.
On the Chilcoot Fire, firefighters were able to complete a large section of line on the east side of the fire. This work ties the northeast corner to the 3806 Road. Firefighters worked with the Douglas Forest Protective Association to secure the line breach that occurred on Thursday. Only a few helicopter water drops were possible due to cloud cover and smoke that socked in the area. The fire continues to creep around in the Hipower drainage and Hipower Bluff area. The Chilcoot Fire is zero percent contained.
For the Ridge Fire, on Thursday crews reached 23 percent containment of the fire. Firefighters continued building line and holding the fire along the 3810 Road. The low-pressure system that moved in brought light rain over the fire, starting early Friday. The moisture will help prevent the fine fuels from carrying fire into heavier fuels.
