Douglas Education Service District’s Youth Development program has received a total of $600,000 in in grant funding to benefit youth.
An ESD release said the team works in partnership with local school districts, higher education, youth-serving organizations and agencies. The program helps youth learn life skills and complete school with a plan.
ESD Director of Education Services Jeneen Hartley said Youth Development Oregon, a department of the Oregon Department of Education, is providing $350,000 in youth reengagement funding to support Douglas ESD’s youth mentors. Hartley said those mentors work in local school districts and with community partners to engage youth in opportunities and future plans.
Hartley said, “Research shows that youth who thrive in life have at least one meaningful adult in their corner helping them navigate life, answer questions, and be a consistent support during a challenging time in life”. Hartley said, “Our mentors can be one of those adults, providing individualized support side-by-side with our school and family partners”.
The release said Youth Development Oregon also awarded $250,000 in Future Ready funding to expand career connected learning in partnership with school district’s career and technical education programs. Hartley said these programs fuel student’s futures. Program activities include hands-on technical skills and certificate programs. Opportunities can include manufacturing, agricultural, business, health sciences, coding and more. Hartley said CTE programs have evolved from vocational education.
