DFPA LIGHTNING FIRES FINAL UPDATE

August 5, 2023 3:40 p.m.

Ground and air reconnaissance have been active and minimal heat and smoke has been found in seven out eight lightening caused fires in the Douglas District.

Rachel Pope of the Douglas Forest Protective Association said patrol and heat checks will continue for several days to come, ensuring that the efforts of fire crews remain successful.

Pope said at the Buckhorn Fire, just over two miles west of Interstate Five in the Azaela area , crews worked diligently Friday night and were able to accomplish seventy percent of mop up before leaving the fire in a controlled status for the night. Progress continued Saturday and by 2:30 pm. the two engines and one squad had completed ninety percent of mop up. Firefighters planned to continue extinguishing all heat and smoke throughout Saturday.

Drift smoke in southern Douglas County continues to originate from the Flat Fire, burning near Agness.

Pope said locally based aviation resources are actively engaged on the South Cascade/Linn County Priceboro Fire. Other than active ground and reconnaissance checks and mop up on the Buckhorn Fire, there are no active fires in Douglas County.
