LENGTHY POWER OUTAGE UNDER INVESTIGATION

July 31, 2023 3:50 p.m.

A lengthy power outage impacted many businesses and residents in the Roseburg area on Monday.

Pacific Power Regional Business Manager Sam Carter told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the outage began at 5:55 a.m. and impacted 1,655 meters. The outage area was in parts of north and west Roseburg. That included Northwest Edenbower Boulevard, Northwest Aviation Drive, parts of Northeast and Northwest Garden Valley Boulevard along with other streets in those areas.

Carter said an attempt was made to restore power to those without, but the same circuit failed again at 7:24 a.m. This time it impacted 1,334 meters. By 12:30 p.m. some customers had been restored but most were still out. Around 1:45 p.m. a large chunk of customers had their power back, but 733 meters were still out.

Carter said all customers were restored by 2:46 p.m. That was nearly nine hours after the original outage began except for a twenty-minute period when the power was restored briefly before going out a second time. Carter said the cause of the outage was not yet known and an investigation was continuing. Some customers that lost power Monday were also without power for around two hours on Sunday.

While some larger retail stores had generators, many stores and businesses affected by the outage did not and had to close or alter operations during the outage. Traffic signals in the outage area did not work, which slowed traffic as well.
