Deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office jailed a man for a warrant and an alleged escape incident on Sunday.

A DCSO report said at 10:20 a.m. a deputy saw a man sitting in a vehicle in the 1800 block of Gazley Road in the Canyonville area.  The deputy knew the 44-year old had a felony warrant out for his arrest. When the deputy turned around to contact him the suspect allegedly jumped out of the driver’s seat and bailed over the embankment towards the South Umpqua River.

The deputy initiated a foot pursuit and chased the suspect approximately 100 yards along the river into the brush all while yelling at him to stop. The deputy backed off and units set up a perimeter waiting for a K9 unit to arrive. The suspect reportedly exited the brush and jumped into the river. Deputies were able to keep an eye on the man until he exited the other side of the river just to the north.

The man was located hiding in the bushes on that side of the river and was taken into custody without incident. The suspect was charged with third-degree escape and for the warrant. He was held without bail.
