Springfield Police say quick response led to apprehension of a stabbing suspect at a Springfield Church Sunday morning.

An SPD report said officers responded to the Crossfire Church in the 900 block of 28th Street regarding a stabbing that had taken place. Sergeant Kyle Potter said officers located a male victim who had sustained lacerations to his head and neck. The victim was provided with medical treatment and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Potter said officers interviewed the victim and witnesses found at the scene. They also located the suspect John Brian Johnson, nearby. Johnson was interviewed and then taken into custody. He was detained at the Lane County Jail, charged with second-degree assault and for unlawful use of a weapon. Johnson was detained without bail.

Potter told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that while the stabbing occurred during the church’s Sunday morning sermon, it did not take place in the facility’s auditorium. Potter said there was no known connection between the suspect and the victim.
