A home fire has displaced a family in the downtown Roseburg area.

Fire Marshal Brian Jewell of the City of Roseburg Fire Department said at 8:05 a.m. Friday, personnel responded to a reported structure fire in the 200 block of Southeast Lane Avenue. Jewell said dispatchers notified firefighters that all the residents had evacuated the structure.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a two-story residence with heavy fire and smoke coming from the kitchen area of the home. That fire was located in the back portion of the structure. The residents said they were sleeping and awoke to smoke inside the home and smoke alarms sounding.

Firefighters conducted a primary and secondary search on both sides of the home, made an interior attack to extinguish the fire and completed extensive overhaul. Jewel said the residence sustained structural, smoke and water damage. The family includes two adults and one child. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents. Two family dogs were able to evacuate the home. However, four cats did not survive.

Jewell said the fire was accidental in nature. A fire investigator was on the scene. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation. Several other agencies assisted the Roseburg Fire Department at the scene.
