A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through 4:00 p.m. Tuesday above 1,500 feet with a Winter Weather Advisory in place above 500 feet for central Douglas County and nearby areas.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said for the Warning area, heavy snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of 6-14 inches, with winds gusting as high as 40 miles per hour. For the Advisory area, 2 to 6 inches are forecast.

For the Warning area this includes the higher terrain of central Douglas County, including the passes on Interstate 5 south of Canyonville and Camas Mountain. For the Advisory area, lower passes on Interstate 5 like Rice Hill, Marvin Hill and Roberts Mountain are included.

Forecasters said travel could be very difficult to impossible. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Travel is strongly discouraged due to dangerous conditions. Those who must travel should keep tire chains, a flashlight, blankets, food, water, medications and a fully charged phone with them.
