February 1, 2023 4:20 a.m.

Multiple media outlets in southern Oregon are reporting that attempted murder suspect Benjamin Foster is dead.

Lieutenant Jeff Hattersley of the Grants Pass Police Department issued a statement just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday which said, “After a several hour long standoff, Benjamin Foster is in custody. A press conference will be held tomorrow with additional information”.

However, the Daily Courier and television stations KTVL and KDRV, say Foster died at a Grants Pass Hospital of a self-inflicted gunshot wound just after 10:30 p.m. The outlets site information they received from law enforcement.

Foster was sought for an attack on a Grants Pass woman a week earlier who had been bound and severely beaten. She remains in critical condition. The 36-year old from Wolf Creek was also charged for a similar crime in 2019, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Law enforcement officials had described the suspect as “extremely dangerous” and said he was armed. They also said Foster had been using dating apps to contact unsuspecting individuals who might be lured into assisting with the suspect’s escape, or potentially as additional victims.

The case has garnered national attention and multiple networks are also reporting that the man is now dead.

News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN contacted the GPPD early Wednesday morning. A dispatcher said he was unable to provide confirmation regarding the situation. KQEN is attempting to contact Lieutenant Hattersley.

More information is expected later Wednesday morning.
