VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO OPEN WARMING SHELTER

January 27, 2023 3:40 a.m.

Onward Roseburg is seeking volunteers to help the Roseburg Warming Center from Sunday through next Wednesday.

A City of Roseburg release said everyone in need of temporary overnight shelter on especially cold nights will be welcome at the center, which is housed at the Roseburg Senior Center, at 1614 Southeast Stephens Street.

Warming center operator Kimetha Stallings said “This isn’t a homeless warming center. It’s a community warming center”. Stallings said, “Some families may have trouble keeping heat on. It’s open for anybody”.

The National Weather Service is calling for overnight lows of between 18 and 26- degrees Sunday through Tuesday nights.

Stallings said, “There is a real risk of death when temperatures get that low”. She said the center may reopen the following weekend if overnight temperatures take another plunge.

Check-in begins at 6:00 p.m. with 60 cots available for guests and volunteers. A free senior center shuttle will make one circuit around town to pickup guests starting at about 5:30 p.m.  It will operate again in the morning. Individuals can arrive anytime during the night. A cot, blanket, and pillow plus hot dinner and breakfast are provided. Guests can stay until 8:00 a.m. each morning.

Stallings will offer volunteer training at 5:00 p.m. Friday at the senior center for anyone interested. The training will go over warming center operations and rules. It will also cover the use of naloxone or Narcan, a life-saving medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. Donations needed include winter clothing for women and men. Those items can be brought to the senior center.

The City of Roseburg may help pay operating costs for the facility, if needed.
