January 27, 2023 4:00 a.m.

A 16-year old male led deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office on a high- speed chase which started late Tuesday night.

Information released Thursday from DCSO said at about 11:45 p.m. a sedan passed a deputy while traveling northbound at 88 miles per hour on Interstate 5 2 miles north of the Winchester interchange. A pursuit was initiated. The driver took the south Sutherlin exit, failing to stop at stop signs and driving into the oncoming lane.

The sedan continued north onto South Calapooya Street, heading into Sutherlin at about 80 miles per hour. The driver slowed down but then ran a red light heading north onto Highway 99 towards Oakland. After continuing through Oakland, the sedan got back onto Interstate Five heading north.

The report said the vehicle took the Metz Hill exit and proceeded north onto Goodrich Highway before failing to negotiate a corner and crashing into a power pole. The teen was taken into custody without incident. DCSO said the juvenile told a deputy that he took off because he was worried as he only had a learner’s permit.

The teen was charged with attempting to elude police in a vehicle, reckless driving and for reckless endangering. He was held at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.
