FIRE CREWS DEAL WITH MILE POST 9 FIRE TUESDAY

August 23, 2022 5:40 p.m.

Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association. rural fire protection districts in Kellogg, Oakland and Elkton, and staff with the Oregon Department of Transportation responded to a confirmed 1.2 acres fire located near milepost 9 on Highway 138W in the Kellogg area just after 12:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Public Information Officer Rachael Pope said to protect the safety of the public and responding firefighters, through traffic on the highway was stopped by ODOT around 12:45 p.m.

Pope said DFPA responded with an aggressive initial attack that included 3 Type 6 engines, a Type 3 engine, 2 5 person squads, 2 helicopters, a fixed wing airplane and a dozer. Pope said firefighters had the forward spread of the fire on both sides of the highway knocked down quickly.

By 2:00 p.m. the fire was 100 percent trailed. By 2:45 p.m. 25 percent of mop up was completed and the highway was open again. Crews will continue mop up until the incident is 100 percent cleared and contained.

Pope said the fire was human caused and is under investigation.
