TIPS FOR DOGS WHEN RECREATING IN NATIONAL FOREST

Staff with the Umpqua National Forest have some tips for those with dogs who are planning to recreate in the forest.

Chris Bentley said while dogs are always welcome, they need to be kept under control at all times. That is to respect natural resources like rivers, streams, vegetation, trails, and other visitors. Bentley said a dog that is excessively barking, aggressive, or chasing animals, is not under control.

A release said dogs should be kept on a leash under most circumstances, especially when recreating in unfamiliar areas or on busy trails when being used by multiple users including bikers and horses. Bentley said dogs should never be left unattended, because dogs allowed to roam freely and without supervision can frighten or injure wildlife, disturb other forest visitors and create impacts to the natural resources.
