WATER SAFETY DAY IS SATURDAY

The YMCA of Douglas County is hosting Water Safety Day on Saturday.

The Y is encouraging parents to learn more about keeping kids safe in, on and around water. YMCA Membership/Marketing Director Amber Gries said the Y is the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming.

The 12th annual event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in front of the Parkview Skating Center as a park and walk up event. All those attending will be given water safety materials and entered to win prizes, which includes a free family membership and free swim lessons.

Gries said YMCA staff and volunteers will be distributing free life jackets at no cost to area youth, while supplies last. The child must be present.

Event sponsors include: Rogue Credit Union, Western Title & Escrow, Bi-Mart, Oregon Serigraphics, Dye Hard Construction, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Brooke Communications.

Gries said this year marks 2,700 life jackets that have been given away to the community.

Water rescue stations were installed last weekend at Stewart Park, River Forks Park, Cleveland Rapids, Whistlers Bend and Hestness Landing.
