DOUGLAS COUNTY JAIL IN-CUSTODY DEATH INVESTIGATION

May 8, 2022 11:20 a.m.

The Douglas County Medical Examiner is investigating an in-custody death after an adult was found unresponsive in their cell Saturday night at the Douglas County Jail.

Lieutenant Brad O’Dell said shortly before 9:00 p.m., deputies called for an ambulance for a 56-year old man in the intake center at the facility. O’Dell said staff attempted lifesaving efforts until the ambulance arrived. Paramedics continued efforts to revive Darin McCafferty of Elk Grove, California, but they were unsuccessful. McCafferty was declared deceased and his next of kin was notified.

O’Dell said, “On behalf of Sheriff John Hanlin and his staff, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere sympathies to the family of Mr. McCafferty during this difficult time”.

The Medical Examiners Office was notified and is investigating the circumstances surrounding McCafferty’s death. O’Dell said an autopsy is expected to be completed early this week by the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office in Clackamas to determine the cause and manner of death.
