A Canyonville woman was jailed after allegedly driving drunk while a man was on the hood of her car.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said Thursday night at about 9:30 p.m. a deputy responded to information that a man was hit by a vehicle. The sedan was found at the Tiller Trail weigh station and the driver was allegedly highly intoxicated and asleep in the passenger side of the sedan. The woman was not able to answer questions and would only talk about unrelated topics.

A deputy stayed with the suspect while another deputy contacted a victim and a witness who stated that they got into an argument with the woman and the suspect then threatened to leave their location. The victim said he didn’t want the woman to drive due to her drinking, so he sat on the hood of the car.

The victim told the deputy that the woman didn’t care, and drove away with him still on the hood. The man said he was stuck there for awhile until they made it to the Tiller Trail Highway, where he was thrown from the vehicle. The victim claimed the woman hit him with the car as she drove off. The victim had scratches on his lower left back and left elbow, according to the report.

The suspect denied the victim’s account, but said she couldn’t remember what had happened. The vehicle had an obvious dent on the hood from the victim.

The woman, identified as 22-year old Devonne Sunderland performed standard field sobriety tests and did poorly, so was taken into custody. While at Corrections her blood alcohol level was registered at .20, which is two and a half times the legal limit for intoxication.

Sunderland was charged with fourth-degree assault, recklessly endangering another person, driving while intoxicated and for failure to perform the duties of a driver to an injured person. Bail was set at $122,500.
