Staff with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is issuing door-to-door sales safety tips.

Lieutenant Brad O’Dell said over recent days there have been several reports of people selling aromatherapy/air purifier/diffuse products. O’Dell said in some the reports, the sales person has pushed their way into the home of a person who has said they are not interested. The sales person is usually female and appears to be alone, but when she leaves, she gets into a large SUV that is occupied by two males. O’Dell said the legitimacy of these salespersons is unclear, but what is clear is that their sales tactics are suspicious and that residents should use caution when dealing with door-to-door sales people as a general rule.

Tips for staying safe when someone knocks at the door includes:

*Use peep-holes to determine who is at the door, and keep the porch light on in the evening

*Refuse to open the door to anyone who isn’t known

*Talk to sales people through the door and let them know you are not interested.

*Never give door-to-door sales people personal information or disclose if home alone

*Utilize “No Soliciting” signs near the front door

*Contact neighbors and put them on alert

O’Dell said suspicious people or activities should be reported to law enforcement.
