TAX SEASON COMING TO A CLOSE

April 12, 2022 3:00 a.m.

The deadline to file state and federal personal income tax returns is next Monday April 18th.

A release from the Oregon Department of Revenue said officials are expecting over 2.2 million returns to be filed this year.

The Oregon Office of Economic Analysis has confirmed a nearly $1.9 billion tax surplus, triggering a tax surplus credit, or “kicker” for the 2021 tax year.

The release said residents are eligible to claim the kicker if they filed a 2020 tax return and had tax due before credits. Even if there is not filing obligation for 2021, residents must still file a 2021 tax return to claim the credit. Filing electronically is the fastest way to get the refund.

The state may use all or part of a resident’s kicker to pay any state debt owed, such as tax dues for other years, child support, court fines or school loans.
