Winchester Dam Viewing Area to Reopen

The Winchester Dam viewing area will reopen to visitors next month.

Information released from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Wednesday said that the viewing area has been closed to the public since early 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

ODFW said they are able to reopen the viewing area on April 1st thanks to the lifting of the state masking rules.

The release said that ODFW offices, however, will remain closed through May 1st.

Officials said that the fish ladder at the Winchester Dam has been a popular place to visit along Interstate 5 for decades, giving visitors the opportunity to see migratory fish like Chinook and Coho salmon, steelhead, and lamprey, up close as they make their way up the North Umpqua River.

Officials remind visitors that there are no restrooms at the viewing area, though there is a restroom is available at the nearby John P. Amacher Park.
