STATE POLICE, OTHER AGENCIES, WORK ON CRASH CLEANUP EAST OF PENDLETON

Troopers with Oregon State Police and other agencies are working on cleanup, following a series of motor vehicle accidents on Interstate 84, about 20 miles east of Pendleton, which took place Monday afternoon.

At about 12:20 p.m. OSP was notified of a crash involving numerous vehicles in the westbound lanes. Responding officers were notified of additional crashes while they were arriving. Once on the scene, troopers could hear more crashes occurring behind them.

Initial scene response revealed multiple crashes along an approximately one-mile stretch of the road involving both passenger cars and commercial motor vehicles. The largest crash is estimated to have involved between 15-20 cars and trucks. Early estimation is that as many as 98 vehicles crashed in the area.

Emergency medical responders and fire personnel from the surrounding area were dispatched to the scene. The Umatilla County Emergency Operations Center was activated.

Westbound Interstate 84 was reopened at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
