FLOOD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK FOR DOUGLAS, NEARBY COUNTIES

January 2, 2022 7:05 a.m.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service have issued a Flood Potential Outlook for Douglas County and nearby areas.

Residents should expect quick rises and a slight potential for flooding on area streams, creeks and rivers due to the combination of heavy rainfall and snow melt. This also applies to Josephine, Coos and Curry counties.

Forecasters said a series of fronts is likely to bring periods of moderate to heavy precipitation totaling 2 to 6 inches of water over much of southwestern Oregon from Sunday night into Wednesday. Much of this precipitation is likely to fall as rain Tuesday into Wednesday as snow levels rise into the 6,000 and 7,000-foot range.

The Weather Service said that currently Deer Creek near Roseburg, the South Fork of the Coquille River at both Myrtle Point and Powers, and the Coquille River at Coquille are forecast to reach the action stage, but are not forecast to reach flood stage between Monday and Wednesday. Other streams are likely to rise significantly during that time and it is still within the realm of possibility that flooding could occur.
