LIGHTENING SPARKS SEVERAL WILDFIRES ON DFPA PROTECTED LANDS

Lightning has sparked several fires across the eastern borders of the Douglas District.

Kyle Reed of the Douglas Forest Protective Association said a thunderstorm moved through that area early Tuesday morning. Reed said DFPA is utilizing both aviation and ground resources, in addition to fire detection cameras to locate new fire starts. Fires detected so far include:

*Susan Creek Boat Ramp Fire: Located 9 miles east of Glide near the Susan Creek Boat Ramp, the fire is burning between the North Umpqua River and Highway 138E. The fire is 1/2 acre in size. Crews have containment lines around the fire and are mopping up hot spots

*Hipower Creek Fire: Located about 20 miles northeast of Glide, the fire is located on the Umpqua National Forest but is within one-half mile of private lands. DFPA’s helicopter is working to keep this fire in check while ground resources work their way into it. The fire is estimated to be 1/10th of an acre in size.

*Canton Creek Fire: Located 19 miles northeast of Glide, the fire is a single tree burning. Crews are working their way into the fire.

*Salmon Creek Fire: Located 20 miles northeast of Glide, this fire was located by industrial landowners working in the area. Ground resources are working their way into the fire. The fire size is not yet available.

*Section Creek Fire: Located about 8 miles southeast of Tiller, this fire is on the Umpqua National Forest but is within a half mile of private lands. The fire has been lined by crews from the Umpqua National Forest and is in mop-up status. It has burned about 1/10th of an acre

*Cowbell Fire: Located 7 miles southeast of Tiller, this fire is 1/10th of an acre and is in mop-up status.

Fire danger remains at Extreme on all DFPA protected lands.
