Oregon State Police has joined agencies in California and Washington in a traffic safety campaign focused on speeding drivers.

An OSP release said it is named “I-5 Alive”, and starts July 2nd. The coordinated education and enforcement effort is aimed at making the 1,381 miles of the freeway safer for all summer travelers.

In addition to a social media campaign, troopers in all three states will be especially watchful for traffic violations that often lead to tragedy on the highways. The release said that speeding and distracted driving top the list, along with driving while impaired by drugs and alcohol and failing to use safety belts and child safety seats.

The release said each state agency will use its best strategies to provide additional enforcement presence during the busy 4th of July weekend. That includes the use of existing grant funding and shifting resources already on the road over the Interstate Five corridor.
