An accidental cooking fire damaged an apartment in Roseburg on Monday.

Fire Chief Monte Bryan with the Roseburg Fire Department said personnel responded to a reported structure fire at about 9:45 a.m. in the 2600 block of Northwest Van Pelt Drive. Bryan said the occupant and her dog were already outside when fire fighters arrived.

Bryan said the building had an automatic sprinkler system installed. A single sprinkler activated when exposed to the fire, effectively extinguishing it and preventing the fire from spreading. Firefighters ensured the fire was completely out, and conducted a primary search, locating and rescuing two birds that were inside the home. A secondary search found no victims and overhaul was completed. Bryan said one adult, the dog and the birds were displaced due to the fire, but no one was injured.

Ten firefighters assisted with firefighting operations. A number of other agencies assisted at the scene.
