ShakeAlert, an earthquake early warning system powered by the U.S. Geological Survey is coming to Oregon.
A release from the Oregon Office of Emergency Management said the technology provides a notice of an earthquake before shaking is felt at a resident’s location. It is already in place along most of the west coast and is operational for key infrastructure systems such as automatic water valve shutoffs and starting back-up generators.
The release said ShakeAlert uses science and technology to detect significant earthquakes quickly. The advance warning allows people and systems to take actions to protect life and property from destructive shaking.
In Oregon, ShakeAlert-powered alert delivery to wireless devices such as cell phones via the Wireless Emergency Alert System, mobile apps and other technologies will begin on March 11th.
