A Roseburg man died in a vehicle versus scooter collision Tuesday evening.

Sergeant Jeff Eichenbusch of the Roseburg Police said just after 5:15 p.m. police and firefighters responded to the accident near the intersection of Northeast Stephens and Northeast Clover.

Eichenbusch said an investigation found that an adult male was riding a stand-up electric scooter headed southbound in the dedicated bicycle lane on the east side of the road. A vehicle driven by a Sutherlin man was exiting a parking lot on the east side of Stephens, getting ready to turn north. Eichenbusch said as the car turned, the scooter rider tried to stop, but the male was ejected over the handlebars of the scooter and got struck under the vehicle. Fire personnel were able to extricate the male. He was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The man later died while at Mercy.

The man’s name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.

Eichenbusch said the investigation is ongoing, but there are no indications that impairment was a factor in the accident. Northbound traffic on Stephens was halted for a time, and was later opened to one lane. The roadway was cleared by around 7:00 p.m.
