2 ROSEBURG RESIDENTS ARRESTED WITH A STOLEN U-HAUL IN EUGENE

2 Roseburg residents were arrested with a stolen U-Haul in Eugene on Thursday and are accused of committing a crime in Roseburg earlier in the week.

Sergeant Jeff Eichenbusch of the Roseburg Police said on Wednesday the U-Haul store in Roseburg reported that one of their rental vans had been stolen. Eichenbusch said surveillance video showed the vehicle was taken last Saturday morning at around 3:00 a.m. The van was entered into the criminal justice system as stolen, on Wednesday.

Eichenbusch said Monday RPD investigated an incident in which a male and a female, driving a U-Haul van, tried to break into an ATM at Oregon Pacific Bank in Roseburg. Eichenbusch said they were unsuccessful, but caused damage to the ATM before driving away. At that time, the vehicle had not been yet been reported as stolen by U-Haul.

On Thursday, Eugene Police located the stolen U-Haul in their jurisdiction. Surveillance on the van was conducted until police saw a male and a female return to it. Those two people were arrested without incident. RPD was then contacted regarding the vehicle being recovered. Eichenbusch said following an investigation the two people were positively identified as the same pair that tried to damage the ATM.

Suspects were identified as 44-year old Jeffrey DeWeese and 37-year old Angela Carpenter. Both were charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, first degree criminal trespass and for attempting to commit a Class C felony. They were taken to Lane County Corrections. Eichenbusch said both have been identified as suspects in several cases in Lane County.
